Bukit Asam (PTBA) Trains 164 Teachers for the Eradication of Illiteracy Movement

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) in collaboration with the Muara Enim District Education Office, the Smart Indonesia Movement Foundation (PENGINCER), and the Faculty of Education at Sriwijaya University held the National Movement for the Eradication of Illiteracy Program (Gernas Tastaba) in Muara Enim District.
This program was designed to improve the reading literacy skills of Muara Enim Elementary School children. 164 teachers got intensive training in basic reading, active reading, and meaningful reading throughout the year. Following practice, the teacher and Study Friends implement it in the classroom.
"Mastering literacy and numeracy is an absolute requirement for human beings to become superior in various fields, particularly in preparing Indonesia's golden generation for 2045. Conducting fundamental, contextual, and meaningful teaching in literacy and numeracy is a concrete to achieve that goal," stated Rio Hartono, Assistant Manager for Sustainability at PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA).
For this reason, PTBA is collaborating with various organizations to develop an ongoing program to be able to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of elementary school students, especially in the Muara Enim Regency area.
"Less than six months after the training, positive changes have been experienced by teachers in Muara Enim Regency who participated in Gernas Tastaba," added Rio.
The success of the Gernas Tastaba Program can be seen in the dramatic increase of kids' reading skills in one of the classes where the teacher was trained in Gernas Tastaba. Before training, only 3-4 pupils could read, but after training, only 3-4 students remained who couldn't read.
Rio is optimistic about the future of literacy and numeracy in Indonesia, particularly in the Muara Enim district. "Hopefully, the knowledge gained by the teachers who participated in the training can be disseminated or passed on to other teachers so that the benefit can be shared more broadly," he said.
Similarly, Marsip Agustam, Head of the Manpower Division of the Muara Enim District Education and Culture Office, reminded the teachers that even though they had received training, they still had another responsibility to complete: sharing their newly learned information with other teachers. Marsip hoped that teacher competency enhancement program would be sustainable by reaching more schools and teachers in the Muara Enim district. "You must share your knowledge. You must make an impact so that your knowledge does not fade," he said.
Ahmad Rizali, Chairman of the PENGINCER Foundation Board, emphasizes the importance of teachers as the focal point of education. Their competencies must be continually improved in order to increase educational quality. Intervention is required in efforts to increase teacher quality, one of which is in literacy and numeracy learning methods at the elementary level.
Rizali hopes that Gernas Tastaba will help to increase competency and enrich teacher learning methods. "That will be the foundation for education at the next level," he said.
