Empowering the Community, Bukit Asam (PTBA) Transforms Unproductive Land in Sukamoro

Formerly unproductive former mining area has been transformed into a catfish pond and an aquaponic vegetable garden, both of which are beneficial for the welfare of the community, as the land on Jalan Karya Muda and Jalan Talang Buluh, Sukamoro Village, Talang Kelapa District, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra.
The transformation is the result of collaboration between PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Kertapati Pier Unit and Karang Taruna Sukamoro with LENTERA SUKAMORO (Processed Catfish Brings Prosperity in Sukamoro) program, with the theme BANGGA BERSERI (Empowered, Healthy and Sustainable Mining Holes).
Teguh Susanto, Chairperson of Karang Taruna Sukamoro, stated that LENTERA SUKAMORO, which has been in operation since 2021, has brought beneficial impact on the community. This initiative empoweres 81 people, including 70 teenagers and 11 housewives.
LENTERA SUKAMORO creates new jobs, raises community income, and teaches new skills in fisheries and vegetable cultivation using aquaponic system.
"The LENTERA SUKAMORO program supported by Bukit Asam is very beneficial for us. There are new jobs in catfish and vegetable cultivation," said Teguh.
In addition to benefiting the community, LENTERA SUKAMORO promotes environmentally friendly land management. For the construction of fish ponds, for example, PTBA uses rubber waste from belt conveyors for the bottom and walls, as well as bottom ash for paving the floor.
The aquaponic system for vegetable cultivation uses nutrients from fish waste to fertilize vegetable plants, therefore reducing reliance on artificial fertilizers and pesticides.
The aquaponic system at LENTERA SUKAMORO is powered by a solar power plant, which runs water pumps to water the plants.
Ichsan Aprideni, General Manager of PTBA Kertapati Pier Unit, stated that the LENTERA SUKAMORO program focuses on community empowerment and improving economic welfare through environmentally friendly activities.
In addition to being a driver of local potential, LENTERA SUKAMORO also raises public awareness about the importance of environmental preservation.
"The success of this program is significant evidence that sustainable community empowerment programs can have a positive impact on many aspects of life, both economically, socially, and environmentally. With innovations such as aquaponics and the use of renewable energy, this program demonstrates that companies can act as agents of change in creating a greener and more prosperous future for their community. In the future, PTBA intends to continue developing LENTERA SUKAMORO so that more people can benefit from it," he said.
