PTBA Transforms Ex-Mining Land into Fish Ponds to Empower Local Community

Muara Enim, July 1, 2022 - As an energy company with a strong commitment to the environment and society, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) incorporates economic aspects into its ex-mining land reclamation program. 2.5 hectares (ha) of the ex-mining land in the Air Laya Mine is now used as reservoir and fishpond managed by 30 local residents.
To develop the business, PTBA provides various assistances such as land management permits, freshwater fish farming training, warehouse facilities, fish seeds storage, and fostering group management.
The fish types include African catfish, parrot fish, gurame fish, catfish, cork fish, and koi. Approximately 200 thousand fish seeds are sold from this pond each month.
"PTBA is committed to making a positive contribution to society and reducing negative impacts on the environment in every operational activity. This program is a real manifestation of the Company's commitment that has been carried out consistently and continuously," said PTBA Corporate Secretary, Apollonius Andwie.
The Company realizes that long-term business sustainability does not only depend on the ability to realize financial targets. But it also depends on the strong support of the local community for day-to-day business operations.
The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program is the company's commitment to sustainable development by providing social, economic, and environmental benefits, focusing on improving the social welfare of the surrounding community such as the Tanjung Enim Mining, Ombilin Mining, Tarahan Port, and Kertapati Pier.
