Bukit Asam Supports Women Empowerment Through Oyster Mushroom Cultivation
Housewives in Sirah Pulau Village, Merapi Timur District, Lahat Regency, fostered by PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), succeeded in harvesting oyster mushrooms on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
There were 6 mushroom houses (kumbung) containing 1,000 baglogs (cylindrical sawdust bags) each, or 6,000 baglogs in total. Each mushroom house was managed by 2 people.
Merapi Timur sub-district head, Edeales Pokal, on behalf of the local residents, expressed his gratitude to PTBA for guiding and sharing knowledge to the local women so they could successfully harvest oyster mushrooms. "We really appreciate this activity because it is improving the quality of villages around PTBA," he said.
One of the oyster mushroom cultivators also expressed her gratitude to PTBA for providing support, "I am really grateful to be able to do my own business and earn my own income from this mushroom cultivation," she said.
According to Listati, PTBA Assistant Manager for Community Engagement, PTBA provides business assistance and empowers the community through economic improvement program by cultivating oyster mushrooms. The success of this program is not only due to continuous assistance, starting from comparative studies to harvesting, but also the community’s desire to progress. Moreover, oyster mushrooms already have a market thus easy to sell.
She hoped that with this positive program housewives would become independent and have promising new business opportunities. They could share their knowledge and ideas to make other women’s lives better.
