PTBA Expands Nursery Center to Support Watershed Rehabilitation and Tourism

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) plans to increase the capacity of the nursery center to support the watershed rehabilitation program and the Tanjung Enim Tourism City program.
Not only for the watershed rehabilitation, the nursery center aims to enrich endemic plant collections and will become an educational facility, as was conveyed at the Technical Coordination Meeting for the Development of Nursery Centers, held by the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), and mining SOEs on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
According to Acting Assistant Deputy for Forestry Product Management and Environmental Services at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ilham, the cooperation scheme between the Government, SOEs and the private sector must be strengthened to support the construction of 30 large-scale nursery centers program that was targeted by President Joko Widodo.
To achieve that target, PTBA is now preparing the development and construction of a large-scale nursery center. As for the existing nursery centers, they are ready to increase their capacity to 3 to 5 million seeds per year. PTBA also proposes that there should be Indonesian nursery centers network to enrich the collections of endemic plants.
The Technical Coordination Meeting agenda ended with a field visit to the 8.8 hectare Rumpin Nursery Center, West Java, which is managed by the Citarum-Ciliwung BPDAS. The seeds from the nursery center have been distributed in West Java, Central Java and Lampung as part of the climate change mitigation program, critical land rehabilitation, watershed rehabilitation, and recovery of disaster affected areas.
During the inauguration of the Rumpin Nursery Center in June 2022, President Joko Widodo in his remarks emphasized that mining and palm oil companies needed to be encouraged to build large-scale nurseries like that of Rumpin. The aim was to improve the quality of the environment in mining and plantation areas as well as to give benefits to the general public.
Finally, Coordinator for Forest Utilization and Conservation of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Fatma Puspitasari emphasized to make Rumpin Nursery Center as benchmark, especially from water utilization, empowering local workers, to energy efficiency by utilizing renewable energy. "But we need to pay attention to the biodiversity and endemism of each region," she said.
Fatma gave an example of one of the endemic plants on the Sumatra island that has been developed in PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) nursery, a forest orchid that was rescued during mining area opening process. Several other endemic plants that have been developed in PTBA's nursery are Merbau (Intsia Palembanica), Tembesu (Fragrea Fragrans), and Gaharu (Aquilaria Malaccensis).
"In the future, in addition to support forest and land rehabilitation, the nursery center will also support the establishment of more botanical gardens that can become educational tourism attractions," concluded Fatma.
