Support from Bukit Asam for the Realization of Environmentally Friendly Agriculture

The rice field in Rejosari Mataram Village, Seputih Mataram District, Central Lampung, has had organic seeds sown there for about four months, and now are prepared for harvest. When the unhulled husk is opened, it reveals rice that is uniformly brown in color, lustrous, and uniform in size—not typical rice.
The organic seeds planting is part of the Food Cluster with Environmentally Friendly Renewable Energy (Ruang Rural) program of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA).
On Thursday, April 11, 2023, General Manager of PTBA Tarahan Port Unit Dadar Wismoko led the First Healthy Rice Harvest in Rejosari Mataram Village. PTBA VP Sustainabilty Hartono, PTBA Social and Community Development Expert Roy Ubaya, Rejosari Village Head Harsono, Field Agricultural Instructor (PPL) Seputih Mataram District, as well as Commissioner and Director of PT Pengayom Tani Sejagad as PTBA's strategic partner in the Ruang Rural Program attended the event.
"With this first harvest, we officially launch our aim to grow brown rice in Central Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. We can hopefully improve welfare with the help of PPL Seputih Mataram and the local farmer groups,” said Dadar Wismoko, General Manager of PTBA Tarahan Port Unit.
In order to establish ecologically friendly agriculture in Rejosari Mataram Village, PTBA offered a variety of help; starting with solar power plants for irrigation pumps, liquid organic fertilizers, organic rice seeds, to production facilities. PTBA provides assistance and monitoring as well.
Gede, a PPL representative from the Seputih Mataram District, expressed his appreciation for the PTBA's concern in developing healthy rice demonstration plots. “My hope is that what is being implemented in the future can be developed further and that there will be follow-ups," he said.
Solar power plant application makes it easier to irrigate rice fields and increase land production. Organic fertilizers use lowers cost for farmers.
Even when water conditions are not yet optimal, harvesting can reach 6.02 tons per hectare. Also, farmers' expenses have been reduced. Unhusked rice, on the other hand, commands a premium price because it is healthier and more environmentally friendly.
"Rejosari farmers support this program. The price of rice is higher because it is healthier, and so on. We ask for continuing direction and support," said Rejosari Village Head, Harsono.
The Ruang Rural program is administered by PTBA in partnership with the farmer's economic organization PT Pengayom Tani Sejagad to support the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) to eradicate hunger, ensure food security and good nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. This is PTBA's active participation as a BUMN in the Government's program, which is aimed at preventing and reducing stunting or malnutrition in the community.
Ruang Rural focuses on numerous aspects such as empowering local communities, increasing the economy, and preserving nature in order to provide optimal benefits for society and the environment; in line with PTBA's Noble Purpose as a member of the MIND ID Group, which is to build civilization, improve welfare, and create brighter future.
