MIND ID Group and Government Discuss Coal Industry's Role in Energy Transition

Bali, August 29, 2022 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID) held The 3rd Energy Transition Working Group Meeting - Parallel Event G20 Presidency of Indonesia with the theme "The Role of Coal Industry Towards Energy Transition and Circular Economy”, held at the Westin Hotel on Monday (August 29, 2022).
The event was divided into 2 sessions: Mini Innovation Workshop and Executive Talkshow. Energy transition is one of the priority issues in Indonesia's G20 Presidency in 2022 with the main focus on access, technology, and funding.
The Mini Innovation Workshop session facilitates comprehensive innovation openness for emission reduction and energy transition, to create support, collaboration, active participation, and ideas from various relevant stakeholders in order to strengthen the spirit of innovation and harmonize the common goal of achieving global emission reduction.
The Head of the Mining Technology Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Anggoro Tri Mursito, Director of Human Resources PTBA Suherman, leaders of mining associations, the Jury and Advisors of the Bukit Asam Innovation Awards 2022 Greenovator, leaders research institutes and technology start-ups, and the youth of the Y20 delegation also attended this workshop session.
This Mini Workshop had an objective to find solutions to support emission reductions, emphasizing the importance of innovation to create carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) at an affordable cost. The workshop participants also agreed that post-mining land use must be not only environmentally friendly but also considering social and economic aspects and in accordance with the needs of the local community.
In the Executive Talkshow session, participants explore ideas and practices to create a joint development step in supporting sustainable energy transition by taking into account the circular economy.
The Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ridwan Djamaluddin, opened the Talkshow session emphasizing that the energy transition does not necessarily mean to eliminate coal.
With technological innovation, emissions from coal can be reduced so that the Net Zero Emission target in 2060 can still be achieved.
"Let's think in another way. The key word is sustainable energy transition. Net Zero Emission in 2060 is a big scenario that we must formulate with extraordinary steps and the key is innovation," he said.
Regarding innovation, Ridwan emphasized the importance of affordability and mastery of technology. He said that the results of this talkshow must be implemented so that the coal industry can support a sustainable energy transition.
The Expert Staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for Strategic Planning as Chair of the Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) G20 Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, Director of Business Development MIND ID Dilo Seno Widagdo, leaders of coal mining companies, and academics and leaders of institutions study also attended this Executive Talkshow.
Special Staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Nanang Untung and VP of Downstream Development of PTBA Setiadi Wicaksono acted as panelists in the talkshow. Meanwhile, Chairperson of Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) Filda C Yusgiantoro acted as moderator.
"We have the best experts, academics, environmental management practitioners, and the young generation who are members of Y20 to give views and input for the implementation of a sustainable energy transition while taking account circular economy. Participation, synergy, and collaboration from all parties will certainly facilitate and accelerate our steps towards the targets that have been set," said PTBA President Director, Arsal Ismail.
The Talkshow session concluded that the sustainable energy transition requires careful planning and preparation, and the commitment of all stakeholders in order to reach the targets.
PTBA Transformation
In line with PTBA's vision to become a world-class energy company that cares about the environment, the company is strengthening its existence and transforming into an energy company.
This transformation is not only carried out to create a sustainable business, but also to support the Indonesian government's target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060, encouraging a sustainable energy transition process, and increasing the company's contribution in supporting national energy security.
"We have implemented various business transformation strategies, such as increasing the portfolio of new renewable energy-based power plants and developing coal downstreaming into dimethyl ether (DME)," Arsal Ismail said.
In terms of mining operations, there are two main programs being carried out, namely Eco Mechanized Mining and E-Mining Reporting System. In the Eco Mechanized Mining program, the company replaces mining equipment that uses fossil fuels to electricity. While in the E-Mining Reporting System program, Bukit Asam utilizes a production reporting platform online and in real time to minimize conventional monitoring with vehicles thus reduce fuel use.
Bukit Asam is also determinedly implementing a carbon management program, integration program to reduce carbon emissions in the company's mining operations, such as reclamation, decarbonization of mining operations, and CCUS studies.
Bukit Asam is currently holding “Bukit Asam Innovation Award 2022 Greenovator Indonesia”, a decarbonization technology competition that focuses on innovation in the field of carbon reduction and CCUS.
"We hope that this competition can support innovations related to decarbonization technology in the mining sector, especially coal, to create affordable, reliable, sustainable energy," said Arsal.
