44th Anniversary of Bukit Asam (PTBA): Realigning, Igniting Change

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) commemorates its 44th Anniversary on March 2, 2025 with the theme "Realigning, Igniting Change." This year’s commemoration was marked by simultaneous ceremonies held at the Tanjung Enim Mining Unit, Kertapati Pier Unit, and Tarahan Port Unit on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Arsal Ismail, President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), expressed that the theme "Realigning, Igniting Change" is more than just a phrase. It serves as an invitation for all Bukit Asam's people to move forward, make improvement, and transform towards a brighter future, with the goal of providing sustainable energy for the nation.
"Realigning" means that all Bukit Asam's people must reflect on the journey and realign the strategies to face future challenges in order to be better. "Igniting Change" signifies the readiness to adapt to every change.
"With 44 years of experience, it is time for PTBA to not only be a spectator of change but to become a pioneer of it. Let us work together to create breakthroughs that not only add value to the company but also contribute to the advancement of the Indonesian nation," said Arsal.
He added that with 44th anniversary commemoration, PTBA must step forward and aim higher, working together to realize the company’s business transformation in order to deliver Sustainable Energy for the nation.
"With the spirit of Realigning and Igniting Change, Bukit Asam continues to innovate and adapt, ensuring sustainable development, supporting energy self-sufficiency, driving economic growth, and improving community welfare," said Arsal.
As part of its efforts to ignite change, PTBA collaborates with various partners to enhance the added value of coal. One such collaboration is with the National Research & Innovation Agency (BRIN) to convert coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheets for battery raw materials. The soft launch of the Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet pilot project took place in the Tanjung Enim Industrial Area on July 15, 2024.
Artificial Graphite is a key material used in the production of Anodes. The Anode Sheet serves as the electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place (positive pole), making it one of the essential components for batteries.
Another downstream coal product being developed by PTBA is humic acid. PTBA, in collaboration with Gadjah Mada University (UGM), is conducting research and development to convert low-calorie coal into humic acid. The launch of the Humic Acid Prototype took place in the Peranap Mining Business Permit (IUP) area, Indragiri Hulu, Riau, on December 12, 2024. The prototype will subsequently be developed into a pilot project.
Humic acid is an organic substance (fertilizer) that can enhance soil fertility and quality by improving structure, retaining moisture, and helping plants absorb nutrients better.
To provide Sustainable Energy for Indonesia, PTBA has diversified its business into new and renewable energy (NRE). The company is exploring several ex-mining lands for the development of solar power plants, including the post-mining lands of Ombilin (West Sumatra) and Tanjung Enim (South Sumatra). The potential for solar power plant in these post-mining areas is estimated to reach 200 Megawatt-peak (MWp).
To date, the company has successfully built a solar power plant at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in collaboration with PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), which has been fully operational since October 2020. The solar power plant has a maximum capacity of 241 kilowatt-peak (kWp) and is installed at the Airport Operation Control Center (AOCC) Building.
In addition to its collaboration with Angkasa Pura II, PTBA is also partnering with Jasa Marga Group to develop solar power plants along toll roads. The 400 kWp solar power plant on the Bali-Mandara Toll Road was completed and inaugurated on September 21, 2022. The company is also working with PT Semen Baturaja Tbk (SMBR) on the construction of a 23.07 kWp solar power plant, which is expected to reach the Commercial Operation Date (COD) stage in June 2023.
