Bukit Asam Coal Museum in Tanjung Enim Officially Opened on 77th Indonesian Independence Day

Muara Enim, August 17, 2022 – Bukit Asam Coal Museum was officially opened on 77th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, attended by the Muara Enim Regent Official Kurniawan, the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkompida), and the Board of Directors of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA).
In 2016, PTBA and the Muara Enim Regency Government launched the Tanjung Enim City Tourism Program, with the goal to make Tanjung Enim, a coal mining area, becoming a tourist destination and independent after the mining activity ended. One way to achieve this goal is to build Bukit Asam Coal Museum as an asset used for storing, collecting, conserving, researching, educating, and entertaining.
"The people of Muara Enim are very happy on such a good day receiving a special gift from PTBA, that is, the Coal Mining Museum complex. God willing it will become an icon of Tanjung Enim tourist city," said Kurniawan in his speech, "On behalf of the government and the people of Muara Enim Regency, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for PTBA's concern for the development of Bumi Serasan Sekundang."
PTBA's Director of Operations and Production Suhedi stated that this inauguration was PTBA's commitment to the vision of sustainability – particularly community and environmental management sustainability. "We hope that later it will provide great benefits through good management involving elements of the community," said Suhedi.
The Coal Museum with valuable education and information about types of coal, subway rooms, mining equipment used in the past, audio-visual theater rooms, the leadership history of Bukit Asam from time to time, is expected to become a local landmark as well as educational tourist attraction for the people of South Sumatra.
In this 4.5-hectare complex, with visitor capacity about 200-300 tourists per day, several tourist destination venues will be built, including Goa Coal Park, Pool, Art Building, Culinary Center Building, Air Fountain Plaza, and several South Sumatran landmark miniatures such as Kuto Besak Fort, Pulo Kemaro Pagoda, Palembang Grand Mosque, Monpera, and others, that have the potential to attract non local tourists. Besides learning about the history of coal mining from the colonial era to the present at the museum, visitors can take trains to have real experience of the underground mine.
Besides the museum, PTBA has built various infrastructures to realize the Tanjung Enim City Tourism program, such as the Mini Zoo, Tanjung Enim Jogging Track, and Love Park. PTBA will also build a 17-hectare Botanical Garden or Collection Garden to increase added value to the post-mining land.
"This tourist destination complex must be maintained and developed together to support the Tanjung Enim City Tourism program. It is also essential to improve the human resources skills and competencies so that what we have today will be managed optimally and provide great benefits in the long term and eventually create a superior and competitive Tanjung Enim," said Suhedi.

On the Independence Day, PTBA President Director Arsal Ismail gave a special message to all PTBA employees, "Our national heroes had fought for our independence and we must not only reflect on their sacrifice, but we must also continue their struggle by making an optimal contribution to our nation. No matter how small, we need to make sure our work is beneficial for the interests of our people, nation and the country," said Arsal.
