To Preserve Marine Ecosystem, Bukit Asam (PTBA) and Sidodadi Village Housewives Restoring Seagrass Meadows

In collaboration with the Forest Farmer Group (KTH), Bina Jaya Lestari, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Tarahan Port Unit together and local housewives planted seagrass seedlings in the Cuku NyiNyi Ecotourism Area, Sidodadi Village, Lampung on Monday, September 23, 2024.
Padang lamun or seagrass meadows are underwater ecosystems composed of seagrass that serve a vital role in marine life and coastal communities, particularly as a habitat for various marine biota such as small fish and shellfish. In addition, seagrass meadows absorb carbon and protect the coastline from erosion.
"This activitiy is part of the company's efforts to help preserve the environment and empower the local community. We intend to plant 10,000 seagrass seedlings over an area of one hectare in Cuku NyiNyi," said Hengki Burmana, General Manager of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Tarahan Port Unit.
In this program, PTBA Tarahan Port Unit and KTH Bina Jaya Lestari also educated the public on the importance of preserving marine ecosystems, especially seagrass beds.
"Many people have not realized the importance of seagrass beds. Seagrass is often regarded as marine plant that disrupts the view and impedes fishermen's activity. In fact, seagrass beds provide many benefits," said Andi Sofiyan, Head of KTH Bina Jaya Lestari.
According to him, restoring seagrass beds can improve biodiversity, which in turn increases fishermen's catches. Seagrass bed restoration not only preserves the environment but also benefits the community.
"The restored seagrass meadows will provide a comfortable habitat for a variety of fish and marine biota. It is expected that the coastal ecosystem of Sidodadi Village would be healthier and more productive," he said.
