Bukit Asam (PTBA) Inaugurates Tanjung Agung’s Solar Irrigation as Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day Gift for Farmers

The solar irrigation at Tanjung Agung Village, Muara Enim, South Sumatra serves as a gift for the farmers on Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day. It was inaugurated by Acting Regent, Muara Enim, Hengky Putrawan and Director of Human Resources of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), Suherman on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Suherman said in his remarks that the solar irrigation project is part of PTBA's efforts to promote renewable energy, empower the community, and preserve the environment, in line with PTBA's noble purpose as a member of the MIND ID Group: for civilization, prosperity, and a brighter future.
"Solar irrigation not only has economic benefits, but it also supports more environmentally friendly agriculture, which reduces carbon emissions. From economic standpoint, this program would have an impact on 121 farmers," said Suherman.
On the same occasion, Henky Putrawan expressed his gratitude for PTBA's efforts to improve community welfare. He urged the people of Tanjung Agung Village to maintain the solar irrigation so that its benefits would continue indefinitely.
“We would like to thank Bukit Asam for fulfilling its environmental and social responsilibities to Muara Enim Regency, particularly to Tanjung Agung District. This solar energy is free and offers a lot of benefits. Let's take care of this solar irrigation together," said Henky.
Tanjung Agung Village's solar irrigation project began construction on November 1, 2023, and began operation on August 15, 2024. The solar power plant consists of 20 modules, each with a capacity of 585 Wattpeak (Wp), for a total capacity of 11.6 Kilowatt peak (kWp).
The electricity supplied by the solar power plant can operate irrigation pumps with heads of up to 15 meters. The pump transports water from the Enim River to a reservoir tank, which is then dispersed to the rice fields. The irrigated land area is approximately 15 hectares.
The solar irrigation system at Tanjung Agung Village has helped sixty farmers in total. Farmers in Tanjung Agung Village are now able to harvest two or three times a year thanks to this solar irrigation. Farmers previously relied on rain-fed rice fields, which allowed them to harvest only once every year.
"Alhamdulillah, Praise God, with Bukit Asam's solar irrigation, we can reap the full benefits. We are grateful because in the future, we will be able to harvest rice fields three times a year, unlike now, when we could only harvest once a year," said Saipul, Secretary of the Tanjung Agung Farmers Group.
PTBA runs solar irrigation program to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 7 (ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all) and point 8 (creating decent jobs and encouraging economic growth).
