PTBA Collaboration with ITB & Unpad to Develop Decarbonization Technology and Downstreaming Program

Bandung, 11 November 2022 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is exploring collaboration with Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Padjadjaran University (Unpad) to develop decarbonization technology and downstreaming research program. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by PTBA President Director Arsal Ismail, ITB Vice Dean for Finance, Planning & Development Muhamad Abduh and Unpad Rector Rina Indiastuti in Bandung on Friday, November 11, 2022.
PTBA Business Development Director Rafli Yandra, Head of the Institute for Science and Technology Development ITB Taufan Marhaendrajana, and Vice Dean for Research and Innovation Unpad Hendarmawan also attended the event.
The Memorandum of Understanding between PTBA and ITB covered the possibility of cooperation in developing technology in the energy and industry sectors taking into account technical, economic and environmental aspects.
The Memorandum of Understanding between PTBA and Unpad stated an agreement to explore cooperation in education, research, and community services.
In his remarks, PTBA's President Director Arsal Ismail stated that in PTBA's transformation to become a world-class energy and chemical company, the company implemented Good Mining Practice with decarbonization programs, expansion into the renewable energy business and downstreaming programs, in which innovation and technology were the keys.
"We realize that coal business is currently being watched throughout the world. Carbon, emissions, and environmental issues are enough to put pressure on the coal industry. With today's MOU signing, we are optimistic that together with ITB and Unpad, we will provide new perspectives related to research and development so that in the future coal will provide more added value and more compliant with the inherent issues," said Arsal.
One of innovations PTBA currently focuses on to support the achievement of global emission reductions is the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Cooperation with universities is expected to encourage new innovations.
"Together with ITB, we are currently focusing on CCUS research, which is currently progressing to the Pre-FS Report (feasibility studies). The research and follow-up is to take current results to the lab/prototype scale stage," Arsal said.
To create a sustainable business and increase the company's contribution in supporting national energy security, PTBA also carries out downstreaming program. Support from universities can make this program a success.
"Strengthening research on coal utilization is certainly very important, because there are still many derivative products that can be produced. Together with Unpad, we are currently focusing on developing research for coal utilization into Quantum Dots that is useful for today's industry that relies heavily on semiconductor materials," said Arsal.
On the same occasion, Unpad Rector Rina Indiastuti said that Unpad was ready to take part in research on the use of coal. "We continue to do research and innovation on coal to become a low-carbon energy source," she said.
Meanwhile, ITB Vice Dean for Finance, Planning, and Development Muhamad Abduh said that as a university that has strength in the field of science and technology, ITB wanted to contribute to the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target in 2060.
"This is certainly in accordance with ITB's commitment. We have a common goal, to use carbon that is considered polluting, yet turn it into something beneficial. Hopefully, we can continue to have close synergy," he concluded.
