Women Empowerment Together with PTBA Through Rosella's Business

Rosella is red flowers with 8-11 hairy petals of 1 centimeter (cm) long. This high-vitamin C herbaceous plant can be processed into a wide variety of healthy products, from tea, syrup, cakes to chili sauce.
A group of housewives manage the rosella processes in the Bukit Asam Industrial Center (SIBA) Center, Lingga Village, Lawang Kidul District, Muara Enim Regency. This business started with the initiative of Dian Afriana, a housewife from Pasar Tanjung Enim Village who wanted to grow rosella plants. With support from PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), Dian invited Family Welfare Development (PKK) members to establish SIBA Rosella in 2019. Currently there are around 30 women from the villages of Lingga, Keban Agung, and Tanjung Enim Market who run SIBA Rosella.
"In 2019, SIBA Rosella was established. We received funding from PTBA with a mandate to develop it. SIBA Rosella is run by Family Welfare Development (PKK) members, but the ownership is not PKK," said Dian.
SIBA Rosella partners with farmers to implement organic farming systems in the process of planting and caring for rosella plants. PTBA facilitates training on processing organic waste into compost, so that they are encouraged to make compost independently by utilizing stem waste from harvested rosella.
Not only funding, PTBA also provides assistance and reinforcement in the marketing process so this product reaching national scale.
"Marketing has now been carried out online through the marketplace Shopee, Tokopedia, the Pasar Digital Platform (PaDi), and offline through Rumah BUMN Muara Enim, establishing partners with shops around South Sumatra and Lampung as well as SIBA Rosella's participation in exhibition and international bazaars at the Mandalika Experience 2022 Moto GP event which was held at the Mandalika Circuit in Central Lombok," Dian said.
PTBA also provided assistance and facilitation for SIBA Rosella products to have certification. Starting from a distribution permit from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), brand certificates, halal certificates, and so on. "We already have BPOM permit and halal certificate, now the ISO process is also underway," said Dian.
The current production capacity for rosella tea is around 100 boxes per day, with a total turnover of approximately IDR 5-60 million per month depending on consumer demand.
"We (Rosella's SIBA members) share profits, sometimes once a month or if it’s only cover the production costs, then once every two months," said Dian.
Because the SIBA Rosella ladies are very enthusiastic, Dian is optimistic that this business can grow further. "In the future, we want to build a restaurant with rosella as the basic ingredients. Our big dream is to export our rosella product abroad," she said.
