Pacu Inovasi, Bukit Asam (PTBA) Dukung Hilirisasi Demi Ketahanan Energi

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a member of MIND ID Group, is driving innovation to promote coal downstreaming and ensure national energy security, in line with the government's Asta Cita initiative and PTBA's vision of becoming a world-class energy company that cares about the environment.
Through collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), PTBA has launched a pilot project to convert coal into Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet for battery raw materials, especially Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. On July 15, 2024, the soft launch for the Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet prototype project took place at Tanjung Enim Industrial Area.
Artificial Graphite is the main material used to make Anodes. The Anode Sheet is the electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place (positive pole), which is one of the important components for batteries.
"Bukit Asam as part of the Ministry of SOEs is committed to supporting government policies that encourage coal downstreaming to create added value domestically, while strengthening national energy security. The development of Artificial Graphite and Anode Sheet could be a significant breakthrough in coal downstreaming. Furthermore, it will also support the domestic electric vehicle sector grow," said Rafli Yandra, Director of Business Development of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA).
Another downstream coal product that is also being developed by PTBA is humic acid. Research and development of low-calorie coal into humic acid is conducted by PTBA in collaboration with Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
The humic acid prototype was launched on December 12, 2024, in the Peranap Mining Business Permit (IUP) area of Indragiri Hulu, Riau. The prototype will then be developed into a pilot project.
Humic acid is an organic substance (fertilizer) that can help fertilize and improve soil quality by improving structure, maintaining moisture, and facilitating improved nutrient absorption by plants.
"The downstreaming of coal into humic acid supports the Asta Cita program of food self-sufficiency, which is a current government priority. We hope that this innovation will help improve people's welfare," said Rafli.
To supply Non-Stop Energy for Indonesia, PTBA is diversifying its business into new and renewable energy (NRE). Several ex-mining lands owned by PTBA are now being explored for potential use in Solar Power Plants development. These include the post-mining lands of Ombilin (West Sumatra) and Tanjung Enim (South Sumatra), which have 200 Megawatt-peak (MWp) potential.
PTBA has built a Solar Power Plant at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in collaboration with PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), which has been fully operating since October 2020. The Solar Power Plant installed in the Airport Operation Control Center (AOCC) Building has a maximum capacity of 241 kilowatt-peak (kWp).
In addition to Angkasa Pura II, PTBA had a collaboration with Jasa Marga Group to build a solar power plant on toll roads. The 400-kWp solar power plant on the Bali-Mandara Toll Road was constructed and inaugurated on September 21, 2022. PTBA is also working with PT Semen Baturaja Tbk (SMBR) on the development of a solar power plant with a capacity of 23.07 kWp, which will reach the COD stage in June 2023.
"We will continue to make various breakthroughs to encourage downstreaming and development of renewable energy. Bukit Asam remains committed to contributing to national energy security, economic development, and community welfare," said Rafli.
