Supplementary Food Provision from Bukit Asam: Ensuring Healthy Children and a Brighter Future

Just over a year ago, Titin Kurniasih felt as though the world was collapsing around her. Anxiety, fear, and worry consumed her, all due to her child's condition.
Dika, as her son is usually called, had been suffering from a prolonged cough. At night, Titin often stayed awake, watching over Dika, who was growing thinner and losing his appetite. At just 1 year and 3 months old, Dika weighed only 7 kilograms (kg), while a child his age typically weighs around 10 kg.
When Titin took her child to Bukit Asam Medika Hospital (RS BAM) in December 2023, it was discovered that Dika was suffering from tuberculosis. An X-ray revealed spots on his lungs, confirming the diagnosis.
"When Dika was born, he was underweight and didn't receive enough breast milk. When he was 1 year and 3 months old, he was examined at BAM Hospital using BPJS Kesehatan. During the X-ray, spots were found on his lungs, indicating tuberculosis," said Titin.
Due to tuberculosis, Dika had to undergo special treatment for several months. "The doctor said that he likely contracted TB from outside the family," she explained.
Titin fought tirelessly to ensure her child's growth and development were not affected. She followed every instruction from the medical staff, sought out nutritious food, and made sure her child received the necessary care, all in the hope that Dika would recover soon.
Titin is a resident of Tanjung Agung Village in Muara Enim Regency. Her husband works as a driver at a mine, while she sells sweets from her home every day to support the family.
Amidst her anxiety, Titin received information from the Tanjung Agung Health Center that the Health Center, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), and the village/sub-district governments in the company's operational area were collaborating to prevent malnutrition in children through the Supplementary Food Provision (PMT) program.
Titin mentioned that her child has been included in the PMT recipient list since early 2024. The PMT consists of formula milk for toddlers, protein-rich foods, and vegetables. Every month, Titin goes to the Tanjung Agung Health Center to collect the additional food for her child.
"The additional food provided is not only nutritious but also loved by my child. It includes formula milk for toddlers, meatballs, vegetables, chicken dumplings, and dumplings. Since receiving treatment and the PMT, my child has been eating heartily and finishes everything every time," she said.
Slowly, Dika's condition began to improve. His appetite increased, his body became stronger, and his weight grew rapidly. Within 6 months, Dika fully recovered from tuberculosis. "After 6 months, it was clear. When examined at BAM Hospital, there were no more spots on his lungs," said Titin.
Dika's weight increased by 4 kg over the course of a year, rising from 7 kg to 11 kg. "His weight and height are now normal. When he was 1 year and 3 months old, his weight had stalled at 7 kg. Now, he weighs 11 kg and his height is 86 cm. The change has been fast," she said.
A smile appeared on Titin's face as she checked her child's growth and development at the Tanjung Agung Health Center in February 2025. Her eyes sparkled with joy. Dika, her son, looked healthy and was actively running around, playing with toy cars.
She expressed her deep gratitude and thanks to the Health Center, PTBA, and the local government for their efforts in addressing the issue of malnutrition in the community.
"Now my child is healthy and active, especially when playing with his cousins. His body is strong, and he rarely gets sick," Titin said.
For information, through the PMT program in collaboration with the Health Centers, the company provides additional nutrition in the form of nutritious food every month to pregnant women and stunted children from underprivileged families around the company's operational area.
Throughout 2024, 50 toddlers received PMT. This year, the PMT program will be held again in Lawang Kidul District, Tanjung Agung District, and Muara Enim District.
The implementation of PMT aligns with the Asta Cita carried by the government, particularly point 5, which focuses on the development of Human Resources (HR) and health. With the spirit of continuously contributing to creating a healthy and high-quality future generation, PTBA is committed to maintaining and enhancing CSR programs that support the improvement of the health and well-being of the nation's young generation.
In addition to PMT, PTBA also runs various other programs aimed at improving public health. These include the Mobile Health Car (Mokesling) and the Public Health Program, which offer free health services to communities around the company's ring 1 area. Also, the Eyes Clinic Goes to School program provides free eye examinations for students.
