PTBA Attempts on Solving Customer Issues Resulted in Saving 35 Billion Rupiah

There are two things can be done when getting complaints. First, just listen and receive complaints without making any attempt to solve them. Second, look for a solution of the problems faced. Most people would choose the first thing. But not for Tanjung Enim Mining Unit (BU-UPTE) in PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) who choose the second option.
BU-UPTE received complaints from several PTBA customers. The complaints were customer still founded stone pack in the coal and their mining equipments are damaged, such as belt conveyor ruptured and so on. Based on the complaints, BU-UPTE tried to find ways to minimize contamination of the stone pack in the coal.
The efforts are paid off by its own manufacturing of Selective Breakers. BU-UPTE planned to create two units Selective Breaker with each capacity of 600 tons per hour. If the same specification equipments are purchased from abroad and imported into Indonesia will cost 20 billion rupiah per unit. For two (2) units, the total cost will be 40 billion rupiah.
Equipped with about 80 personnel expertise and experience, BU-UPTE team proposed 7 billion rupiah budget per unit. Total 14 billion rupiah by manufacturing its 2 (two) own Selective Breakers. However, when a unit was fully manufactured, it only cost not more than 2.5 billion rupiah. Thus, manufacturing cost for two units will be below 5 billion rupiah. Innovation in own manufacturing rather than buying two (2) units of Selective Breakers and imported from abroad, has given PTBA cost efficiency. In this case, 80% cost reduced or 35 billion rupiah for PTBA.
In terms of time efficiency, the delivery time provided by abroad seller was long. In addition for the time required for manufacturing process, logistics and transportation from factories to import into PTBA location also will take time. Besides, the equipment technicians or operators still have to take time for studying the mechanisms and ways of working the new equipments. One unit Selective Breakers manufacture originally was planned to take 5 (five) months. However, BU-UPTE team managed to prove its reliability by completing the manufacture of 1 (one) unit of the device at the end of March 2015, which commenced in 2015 January. The finsihed Selective Breaker was placed in the temporary stock 1 in Air Laya Mine for for one month trial until end of 2015 April. Currently, the second Selective Breaker is on manufacturing stage. Option to look for a solution by BU-UPTE provide contributed cost and time efficiencies for PTBA.
