Batik Kujur Appears at New York Indonesia Fashion Week 2023

PTBA Encourages Local Wisdom to Go International, Batik Kujur Appears in the US
The brightly colored Batik Kujur, traditional Tanjung Enim Batik from Muara Enim Regency, appeared at the New York Indonesia Fashion Week, which was held on February 11, 2023 at Pier 36 Cruise Ship 299, South Street New York, United States.
New York Indonesia Fashion Week 2023 was collaborating with the Indonesia Fashion and Art Festival (IFAF) to bring in a number of fashion designers. These designers brought traditional fabrics from various regions in Indonesia. The appearance of Batik Kujur at this prestigious fashion show was a collaboration between PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) and a designer from Tanjung Enim, Eva Yasul.
Eva Yasul's theme at the event was The Vibrant of Batik Kujur Puyang Pelawe using Batik Kujur fabric from PTBA’s fostered craftsmen, who won the Tanjung Enim Traditional Batik Contest at the end of 2022. There were 6 (six) Batik Kujur collections showed at the New York Indonesia Fashion Week 2023.
Batik Kujur trademark motifs are kujur, coffee, tengkiang houses, and tanjung flowers, all of which have their own philosophy. Kujur is a traditional weapon, a spear wrapped in bamboo, left by Puyang Pelawe, the founder of Tanjung Enim in the 14th century.
"Batik Kujur is a local wisdom of South Sumatra that needs to be preserved. We feel proud to be able to promote Batik Kujur so that it will be more recognized in foreign countries. We would like to thank PTBA for continuing to foster Batik Kujur craftsmen in preserving local culture," said Eva.
PTBA supports Batik Kujur development through the establishment of the Bukit Asam Industrial Center (SIBA) Batik Kujur. By the end of 2022, there were 12 SIBA Batik Kujur groups with 35 craftsmen members, consisting of housewives from Tanjung Enim Village, especially Dusun Tanjung.
"SIBA Batik Kujur is one of our efforts to preserve local culture while increasing the community's economy, especially batik craftsmen, through development and empowerment programs," said PTBA Corporate Secretary, Apollonius Andwie.
PTBA also provides facility for SIBA Batik through Batik Kujur Outlets in the SIBA Center area. Furthermore, to support the production process, the Company made social investments in facilities and infrastructure development needed for batik activities and Batik Kujur production house in Dusun Tanjung.
