PTBA Provides Turning Waste into Various Crafts Training in Female Correctional Institution

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Tarahan Port Unit collaborated with the Class IIA Female Correctional Institution in Bandar Lampung to empower inmates through training to develop skewer waste into various handicrafts. This program was also supported by PT Hanan Alam Utama (PT HAU) as supplier of raw materials and product distribution, as well as Kampus Bumi as workshops and training provider.
Training participants were those whose prison term was almost over and required skills to return to society. By 2022 there were 10 participants of this program.
The end-products from skewer sorting waste include tissue boxes, delivery boxes, and fruit boxes. With this program, the Class IIA Female Correctional Institution in Bandar Lampung gain skills and income from the handicrafts profit sharing. Another benefit from this program include the public view towards ex-convicts, from those who are considered to be a burden to society to become independent self-confident people who create creative handicraft products, have skills, and are ready to open jobs.
"PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Tarahan Port Unit initiated the development of waste sorting from skewers production that have not been utilized that become waste load to the environment into end products, based on vulnerable groups empowerment, in this case Female Correctional Institution inmates," said the General Manager of PTBA Port Unit Tarahan, Dadar Wismoko.
The production of tissue boxes and bamboo curtains from skewer waste is part of PTBA’s Bamboo for Life Program that has been run since 2014 in the Tarahan Port area, which then continue to various areas around the company.
PTBA has cumulatively planted 13,624 units of bamboo trees on an area of 49 hectares (ha) to restore arid land in various areas in Lampung Province. Carbon absorption reaches 3,509 tons of CO2e per year.
Since 2018, PTBA Tarahan Port Unit has provided assistance and development of skewer production to empower vulnerable groups (elderly) in Sidomulyo Village.
"With PTBA support, a sustainable program is created, called Sistem Manajemen Bahtera Bambu (the Bamboo Ark Management System). From structured cooperative institutions, clear SOPs, to skewer industrial centers have implemented Total Productive Maintenance and 5R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace, Replant). Thus the program provides economic, social and environmental benefits in a sustainable manner," said Dadar.
