PTBA and the Krajan Association Break a Record for Empowering 1,127 Elderly for Skewers Production

Lampung, November 18, 2022 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) in collaboration with the Krajan Association received an award from the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) for empowering 1,127 elderly people in the skewer production business.
MURI Operational Director Jusuf Ngadri gave the award directly to PTBA General Manager of Tarahan Port Unit Dadar Wismoko and Chairman of the Krajan Samadi Association at the Skewer Center of the Krajan Association, South Lampung on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.
Yusuf Ngadri said that the award was given not only because PTBA's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program initiated the skewer business but also empowered the elderly.
"This skewer CSR program improves the economy of the elderly and helps the village economy. The skewers production by 1,127 elderly people deserves a MURI record because this is the first in Indonesia and even in the world," said Yusuf.
PTBA Tarahan Port Unit General Manager Dadar Wismoko said that since 2018 the company had provided assistance and development of skewer production in Sidomulyo Village and this business had helped overcome the unemployment problem in Sidomulyo Village ever since.
"We are collaborating with Krajan Association to empower the elderly people to be productive again. Starting from conventional businesses, they now have their own production houses. PTBA also strengthens the establishment of fostered partners' institutions to become cooperatives," he said.
The skewer production development program was initiated due to the Krajan Association’s concern about Indonesia's dependence on imported skewers. With support from PTBA, the people of Sidomulyo Village was able to open new business opportunities.
Production of skewers every day reaches 5 kg per person and each can get Rp1.2 million additional income per month. The empowered community also shares their profits from the sale of the skewers for charity activities. Every month, Rp6-8 million from the profit is given to TPQ Mutiara Ummat Insani that takes care of 37 students. Also, some of the profits are used for house renovations for the elderly people. So far, there are 7 houses that have been renovated.
The development of skewer production is part of Bukit Asam’s Bamboo for Life Program since 2014 in the Tarahan Port area, which then expanded to various areas around the company. The bamboo planting is aimed at restoring arid land. "There have been 13,624 bamboo trees on an area of 49 hectares (ha) planted by PTBA cumulatively in various areas in Lampung Province. Carbon absorption reaches 3,509 tons of CO2e per year," said Dadar Wismoko.
General Manager of Human Resources and CSR of PTBA Tarahan Port Unit, Hamdani, said that the company always focused on ESG and GRC standards as a form of Social and Environmental Responsibility. “Not only environmental conservation, the Bamboo for Life Program also benefits the community. Since 2018, PTBA Tarahan Port Unit has been helping the community to downstream bamboo. Besides skewers, bamboo is also processed into bamboo vinegar with various derivative products such as liquid organic fertilizer, hand sanitizer, bamboo vinegar herbal medicine, and disinfectant,” he said.
The Bamboo for Life program has earned PTBA the Gold PROPER award in 2020 and 2021.
