PTBA and INKA Will Develop Electric Mining Vehicles to Reduce Carbon Emissions

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a member of the mining BUMN holding MIND ID, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero)/ INKA to develop an electric-based mining vehicle, on Tuesday (07 December 2021).
This collaboration is a form of BUMN synergy in supporting the government to push the Net Zero Emission target in 2060.
This synergy is also one of PTBA's real steps to realize the company's decarbonization commitment, in accordance with PTBA's vision to become a world-class energy and chemical company that cares about the environment.
The MoU signing will be followed by team formation and preparation of a comprehensive joint study related to the development of environmentally friendly electric-based mining vehicles.
President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk Suryo Eko Hadianto said that in accordance with President Joko Widodo's direction, which emphasized the Indonesian government's commitment to net zero emissions by 2060, BUMN companies had the opportunity to optimally contribute to realizing this commitment.
“One way is by shifting mining operational vehicles to electrical ones. This is an opportunity for us to develop, instead of buying or importing. So imports can be reduced as much as possible," said Suryo Eko.
He hopes that this MoU signing can be immediately continued to the next stage and by the end of 2022 there will be vehicle prototypes that can be developed.
President Director of PT INKA (Persero) Budi Noviantoro explained that this collaboration was based on the expertise of each company. "We are collaborating; INKA’s capability is making electric-based vehicles and PTBA has expertise as a mining operator. We have to make this program – developing electric-based mining vehicles – a success.”
PTBA currently has a series of programs to reduce carbon emissions, including:
- Convert oil-fueled mining equipment into electric fuel through the Eco-Mechanized Mining (e-MM) program
- Change operational vehicles to electric vehicles
- Carry out reforestation on ex-mining land, by collaborating with the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to conduct studies related to plants that are able to reduce carbon emissions in the air; and
- Replace ozone-depleting substances (BPO) such as using environmentally friendly AC refrigerant and replacing BPO-Halon 1211 in Light Fire Extinguishers.
The Company also commit to the issue of Climate Change by strategic collaboration between PTBA and the international CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) institution in the form of assistance in the preparation of the PTBA CDP-Climate Change Report.
