Bukit Asam's Three Strategies Towards Net Zero Emission

Muara Enim, 10 October 2022 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) is committed to supporting the Government's target of achieving zero emissions or Net Zero Emissions by 2060. With a vision to become a world-class energy and chemical company, PTBA has a carbon management roadmap until 2050, both in terms of emission reduction (reducing emission sources) and increasing emission absorption (increase carbon sinks).
There are 3 approaches taken by PTBA based on the carbon management roadmap until 2050, namely decarbonization of operations, reclamation, and CCUS studies (carbon capture, utilization, and storage).
In terms of decarbonizing operations, the company applies Eco Mechanized Mining, replacing mining equipment that uses fossil fuels into electricity.
"Several electricity-based equipment used by PTBA include 7 Electric Excavators of the Shovel PC-3000 type, 40 Dump Trucks in the 100 Ton hybrid class (Diesel and Electric), and 6 Electric-based Mining Pumps. As a result, PTBA's energy use intensity goes to 0.279 GJ/Ton and continues to decline," said PTBA Corporate Secretary Apollonius Andwie.
The company also implements the E-Mining Reporting System, which is a real time and online production reporting system to minimize fueled-based conventional monitoring.
Other decarbonization efforts include the replacement of ozone-depleting substances (BPO) such as the use of environmentally friendly AC refrigerants and the replacement of Halon 1211 in light fire extinguishers. These programs are implemented and developed continuously in every line of the company to provide optimal results.
In terms of reclamation to restore ex-mining land, PTBA as of June 2022 has planted 1,333,350 trees in an area of 2,144.26 hectares (ha). "Various types of trees planted include Sengon, Teak, Mahogany, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Angsana, Merbau, Bamboo, Jabon, Pinus, Johar, and Longkida. As for this year, PTBA targets an additional 17.19 ha of land reclamation," Apollo explained.
In terms of the CCUS study, Bukit Asam holds Bukit Asam Innovation Award 2022 activity with the theme Greenovator Indonesia, a decarbonization technology competition that focuses on innovation in the field of carbon reduction and CCUS.
"We hope this competition can support new innovations related to decarbonization technology in the mining sector, especially coal, to create environmentally friendly, reliable, sustainable mining and energy," said Apollo.
PTBA's operational management related to the environment is in accordance with international standards. The Company has the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management certification. During January-June 2022 period, the emission reductions by PTBA have reached 77 thousand tons of CO2e.
