Bukit Asam (PTBA) Constructs a Botanical Garden on Former Mining Land to Create a Tourist City

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), in collaboration with the Muara Enim Regency Government, has launched the Tanjung Enim Tourism City Program since 2016. The goal is for Tanjung Enim, a coal mining location, to become a tourism destination and self-sufficient in the future.
PTBA has constructed a variety of facilities and infrastructure to accomplish this vision, one of which is the Botanical Garden or Collection Park on a 17-hectare (ha) post-mining site. This park is expected to become a popular tourist destination in Tanjung Enim.
Niko Chandra, Corporate Secretary of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), stated that the construction of the Botanical Garden is a form of the company's social responsibility for the local community.
"After all, coal mining reserves will run out eventually. The Tanjung Enim Kota Wisata program is projected to be one of economic pillars in Tanjung Enim area that will continue to grow," said Niko.
The Botanical Garden currently has a management office, educational buildings, educational statues, cottages, a camping area, a food court, a prayer room, restrooms, visitor parking, and other amenities.
Meanwhile, the construction of road infrastructure, pedestrian areas, drainage systems, and a replica of the Sriwijaya Ship, which will become the icon of this park, is still ongoing.
The Botanical Garden also incorporates a bioregion concept, representing numerous Indonesian islands, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, Java, Bali, Lesser Sunda, and reclamation areas. Each bioregion will be planted with endemic flora specific to each island, including fruit plants.
In addition, the Botanical Garden will have a variety of game rides to entertain visitors.
"The Tanjung Enim Tourism City Program is a manifestation of PTBA's commitment to the vision of sustainability, especially sustainable community and environmental management. It is envisage that this program can further improve the community’s standard of living from the tourism sector," said Niko.
