Cataract Surgery for Free

Bukit Asam organized free cataract surgery to the community in the company's operational ring 1 as one of activity series commemorating its 41st Anniversary. PTBA Tanjung Enim Mining General Manager, Venpri Sagara, opened the cataract surgery activities event at Bukit Asam Medika Hospital (RSBAM) Tanjung Enim, on February 25, 2022.
Venpri expressed his gratitude to the community around the company from Lawang Kidul, Tanjung Agung, Muara Enim within Muara Enim Regency, as well as West Merapi and East Merapi from Lahat Regency who trusted Bukit Asam and RSBAM to carry out this cataract surgery program. There were 150 people at the first screening, 48 people at the second screening and finally 36 people participated in the program.
According to Venpri, since the eyes are sensitive, even if this current program is over, PTBA Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which main focus is health, would still carry out similar activities. This means PTBA will immediately assist people with cataracts, especially the retirees and local community. PTBA can carry out sustainable activities, especially for the underprivileged people; that would not be a problem.
Venpri hopes that RSBAM will have better equipment in the future so that the cataract surgery patients will get healthier sooner and don’t have to get their eyes closed after the surgery. Hopefully in the future Bukit Asam Management can fully support this positive activity.
Representing the Government, the Lawang Kidul District Secretary, Safar Evandi, showed his appreciation for PTBA's concern for the community, especially in the Lawang Kidul to implement and support public health development quality. "This is also in line with the achievement of the vision and mission of Muara Enim Regency; that is, Healthy, Independent, Religious, Prosperous, and Competitive People," he said.
Meanwhile, dr. Alfurqon Sp.M from the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (PERDAMI) Muara Enim Regency, who is also the Director of Dr. RSUD. H. Mohamad Rabain Muara Enim, expressed his gratitude and wish to make this positive activity an annual event because it was extraordinary. "Data shows that the number of blind people in Indonesia reach 8 million people, of which 80% are caused by cataracts. We as representatives of ophthalmologists throughout South Sumatra are very happy because we are very concerned about this cataract blind problem," he said.
The community also highly appreciated this free cataract surgery. Hasanuri (72), residents of Tanjung Raja Village and Masna (62), both Kepur Village residents from Muara Enim Sub-district, for example, expressed their gratitude because the cataracts that they had experienced had been treated with free cataract surgery from PTBA. "We are greatly helped by PTBA free cataract surgery, because the actual surgery cost is expensive," said Hasanuri, confirmed by Masna.
