PTBA Supports Sawahlunto Coffee Farmers in Harvesting and Creating Added Value

Sawahlunto, June 4, 2026 – PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a member of MIND ID, Indonesia’s State-Owned Mining Industry Holding, through its Ombilin Mining Site, joined the Sawahlunto City Government in a coffee harvesting event with the Harapan Baru Farmer Group in Balai Batu Sandaran Village, Sawahlunto City, West Sumatra.
The joint coffee harvest reflects the strong synergy between the Company, local government, and the community in supporting agricultural development while promoting community economic empowerment based on local potential.
Currently, the Harapan Baru Farmer Group manages approximately 18 hectares of coffee plantations. To support its development, PTBA has provided superior coffee seedlings and coffee-processing equipment to help improve productivity and enhance the quality of harvested coffee beans.
PTBA Corporate Secretary Division Head *Eko Prayitno* stated that the program is part of the Company's commitment to creating sustainable added value for communities surrounding its operational areas.
“The success of a community empowerment program is not measured solely by its current achievements, but also by the community’s ability to continue growing and becoming self-reliant in the future. Through coffee development initiatives, we aim to foster sustainable livelihoods, strengthen the local economy, and enhance the competitiveness of regional flagship products,” said Eko.
Similarly, Acting General Manager of PTBA Ombilin Mining Site, *Alman Syarif*, emphasized the Company's ongoing commitment to supporting community empowerment programs that generate long-term economic benefits.
“We believe that the coffee-growing potential in Balai Batu Sandaran is highly promising and deserves further development. PTBA is present not only as a mining company but also as a partner that grows together with the community through sustainable empowerment programs. The seedlings and equipment provided are expected to improve coffee production quality while creating broader economic opportunities for local residents,” said Alman.
Alman also expressed his hope that the success of the Harapan Baru Farmer Group would inspire other farming communities to further develop their local potential and create sustainable sources of income.
Sawahlunto Mayor Riyanda Putra also praised PTBA’s commitment to supporting community development through the agriculture and plantation sectors.
“We appreciate PTBA’s active involvement in assisting local communities through tangible programs such as this coffee development initiative. Sawahlunto has significant potential in agriculture and plantation industries, and collaborations like this play an important role in improving community welfare while strengthening the local economy. Moreover, coffee is a commodity with strong prospects for sustainable growth and development,” Riyanda stated.
Meanwhile, Beby Candra, Leader of PTBA-Assisted Coffee Farmers in Sawahlunto, expressed his appreciation for the support provided by PTBA in developing the coffee business in Balai Batu Sandaran.
“Before receiving PTBA’s assistance, our focus was solely on cultivation. With the support of superior seedlings, equipment, and continuous mentoring, we have come to understand the importance of post-harvest processing in improving both the quality and market value of our coffee.
This program has not only helped increase farmers’ income, but has also strengthened our optimism that Balai Batu Sandaran coffee can become one of the region’s flagship products,” said Beby, who is affectionately known as Abi.
The event began with a visit to the farmer group's coffee nursery. During the visit, participants observed firsthand the seedling cultivation process and the development of coffee plants, which form part of PTBA’s community empowerment program.
The activities continued with a joint coffee harvest at the plantation area. Participants took part in picking ripe red coffee cherries, symbolizing the success of the coffee development initiative carried out by the local community. Beyond cultivation, participants also observed post-harvest processing activities, including coffee bean pulping and hulling using equipment utilized by the farmer group to enhance the quality of their coffee products.
The event concluded with participants enjoying coffee produced from the plantation and processed by the Harapan Baru Farmer Group at its coffee processing hut. The occasion served as a tangible demonstration of the success of a community empowerment program that continues to be developed sustainably through the utilization of local potential.
