PTBA and Pertamina NRE Explore Solar Power Plant Development on Post-Mining Land

Jakarta, July 2, 2026 – PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of Solar Power Plant (PLTS) projects within PTBA's operational areas. The MoU marks a strategic collaboration between the two state-owned enterprises to accelerate Indonesia's energy transition while creating sustainable long-term value for the nation.
PTBA President Director Bambang Ismawan stated that the collaboration with Pertamina NRE represents a strategic milestone for the Company in supporting the development of solar power projects outlined in Indonesia's 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
"This collaboration marks a strategic milestone for PTBA in accelerating our energy business transformation, strengthening our renewable energy portfolio, and increasing the contribution of future energy revenues," Bambang said.
As an energy company, PTBA believes that sustainability is not only about reducing carbon emissions but also about maximizing the value of all available resources through innovation and technological advancement.
PTBA Director of Downstream Business Development and Product Diversification, Turino Yulianto, emphasized that Sustainability Through Technology is one of the key drivers toward a sustainable energy future. Technology enables the Company to address environmental challenges without compromising energy security or economic growth. Therefore, PTBA believes that coal should not simply be phased out.
"In my view, what matters most is how we leverage technology to produce cleaner, more efficient energy while significantly reducing carbon emissions. At the same time, we continue to develop new and renewable energy as part of Indonesia's future energy portfolio. This vision is fully aligned with PTBA's ongoing transformation," Turino explained.
In addition to developing coal downstream projects such as Coal-to-DME, Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), and Potassium Humate—which create added value while reducing emissions intensity—PTBA continues to expand its renewable energy business. To date, the Company's total installed solar power capacity has reached 1.2 MWp.
Through initiatives such as these, PTBA aims to make a tangible contribution to reducing carbon emissions while fostering a competitive green business ecosystem. The Company also expects its clean energy portfolio to serve as a stepping stone toward securing green financing for future downstream projects.
"Through our partnership with PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy, we see significant opportunities to optimize PTBA's national assets, including the utilization of post-mining land for solar power plant development, as well as other renewable energy opportunities that can simultaneously generate economic, social, and environmental benefits," he said.
Turino noted that PTBA's reclaimed and rehabilitated post-mining areas have strong potential to be transformed into green energy hubs. This would allow former mining sites to gain a new purpose as clean energy sources supporting Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target.
"One of the major challenges in developing solar power plants is land availability. On the other hand, we have extensive reclaimed post-mining land. It would be highly beneficial if these reclaimed areas could be repurposed as sources of new energy. We have thousands of hectares of post-mining land, and based on preliminary assessments, more than 250 hectares are already suitable for immediate development," he added.
Turino expressed confidence that the collaboration between PTBA and Pertamina NRE will serve as a concrete example of how synergy among state-owned enterprises can accelerate Indonesia's energy security through technological innovation and the optimization of national assets.
