PTBA Strengthens Energy Transition and Carbon Emission Reduction through Phase II Cofiring Trial

Tanjung Enim, June 15, 2026 – PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a member of MIND ID, Indonesia’s Mining Industry Holding, continues to reinforce its commitment to supporting the energy transition and reducing carbon emissions through the implementation of the Phase II Cofiring Trial at the 3x10 MW Banko Barat Mine Mouth Power Plant on June 9–10, 2026.
This program is part of the Company's decarbonization initiatives to establish more environmentally friendly power plant operations while supporting Indonesia's Net Zero Emission (NZE) target.
In this second-phase trial, PTBA utilized biomass consisting of 2% Red Calliandra wood pellets and 3% mixed biomass derived from pulai, acacia, and puspa plants. These proportions represent an increase compared to the Phase I trial conducted in September 2025, which used 1% biomass from land-clearing activities for each biomass type.
PTBA's Head of Mine Development Department, Ferry Fadri Al Ilham, stated that the trial was conducted using the same parameters as the previous phase, with increased biomass types and volumes.
"This trial is part of PTBA's continuous efforts to optimize the utilization of biomass as a complementary energy source to coal. The results will serve as the basis for evaluating and further developing cofiring implementation in the future," he said.
Ferry added that the trial was carried out smoothly without requiring any modifications to the existing power plant infrastructure or core operating systems.
Director of PT Bukit Energi Servis Terpadu (PT BEST), Zulkurniadi, explained that the implementation of cofiring does not alter the existing operational system of the power plant.
This operational reliability is supported by the Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler technology used at the Banko Barat Power Plant. Although biomass has a lower calorific value than coal, the plant's performance and reliability remain well maintained.
The supply of Red Calliandra biomass is the result of a collaboration between PTBA and Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Yogyakarta (UPNVYK), which has been developing an Energy Plantation since January 2024, including the construction of a wood pellet processing facility.
Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture of UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurcholis, M.Si., explained that Red Calliandra has the ability to absorb carbon dioxide and produce high-quality biomass with a calorific value exceeding 4,300 kilocalories per kilogram, enabling it to support the combustion process without compromising the quality of the energy produced.
In addition to supporting decarbonization efforts, PTBA is also preparing to ensure a sustainable biomass supply through the development of Energy Plantations. Red Calliandra was selected because it is a fast-growing species, has a high energy content, and can regenerate after harvesting without requiring replanting.
PTBA's Head of Corporate Secretary Division, Eko Prayitno, stated that collaboration among industry players, academia, and company plays an important role in strengthening PTBA's transformation into a sustainable energy company.
"This initiative demonstrates the Company's tangible commitment to supporting national energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and accelerating the transition toward a cleaner energy future," Eko concluded.
